Tall tower in the Borders

Tall tower in the Borders

You might notice the grass growing on the roof of Smailholm Tower (TD5 7PG).
This well-preserved 15th Century Scottish tower house was given a living roof a few years ago.
Sedum and grass seed was planted on a bed of clay in order to reduce the amount of water penetrating the old roof.
Less easy to repel were the repeated attacks by English raiders in the 1540’s.
However in 1640 the house was successfully defended by a group of Covenenters fighting Royalists during the Civil War.

The English army crosses the River Till in 1513

On the way to the Battle of Flodden, the English army camped at Wooler Haugh (nowadays the site of the Riverside Leisure Park).
Not far from Chatton, location of Apple Pie Cottage, lies Weetwood Bridge which was first constructed as a crossing place over the River Till during the early 16th Century.
This bridge has been altered since it was built but it does lie on the direct route from Wooler Haugh where it would have offered the army the best crossing point over the Till for its heavy ordnance and other equipment.

The Vicar's Pele at Corbridge

The Vicar's Pele at Corbridge

Visitors to Yew Tree Cottage will want to go to Corbridge, a village nearby along the Tyne Valley.
During the 15th and 16th centuries, the inhabitants of the Borders had to live in a state of constant alert for raids, and for self-protection, those who could afford it built special fortified houses and towers.
The Vicar's Pele is one such building and dates from about 1318.
You can see it within the church yard of Saint Andrews at Corbridge.
