Tall tower in the Borders

23rd February, 2015

You might notice the grass growing on the roof of Smailholm Tower (TD5 7PG). This well-preserved 15th Century Scottish tower house was given a living roof a few years ago. Sedum and grass seed was planted on a bed of clay in order to reduce the amount of water penetrating the old roof.

Less easy to repel were the repeated attacks by English raiders in the 1540’s. However in 1640 the house was successfully defended by a group of Covenenters fighting Royalists during the Civil War.

Why visit Smailholm Tower? You might want to see this historic building where Walter Scott spent some time during his childhood. Apart from the wild craggy location, you can wander around the five levels of the building; the upper three floors are used as an exhibition of costumed figures and tapestries recalling Scott’s ballads and the turbulent history of the area.

Smailholm Tower is 6 miles west of Kelso – about one hour’s drive from Apple Pie Cottage. The property is maintained  by Historic Scotland.
