Stately Melrose Abbey - lovely Border town
11th January, 2019
Melrose Abbey is a striking feature of this Scottish town. Maintained by Historic Scotland visitors are able to walk around these soaring ruins and then visit the Commendators house Museum to see a collection of medieval objects found in the abbey cloister. Like many church buildings, abbey and monasteries they fell into decline (or were dissolved at the time of the Reformation). Here the last monk died in 1590. The heart of Robert the Bruce is said to have been buried here.
Apart from the Abbey, Melrose has a pleasant high street, some interesting shops and welcoming tearooms. Well worth a visit.
