Snowdrop time at Etal Castle

Etal Castle, Northumberland was built around 1340.
It had strategic importance in the border wars with Scotland.
Just before the Battle of Flodden in 1513, the castle was briefly captured by the Scottish King James IV.
Today the castle lies in ruins but there is enough to see to make a visit worthwhile.
Open to the public for most of the year, their is an additional historic exhibition hosted by English Heritage.

St Aidan of Northumbria

Otherwise known as the Apostle of Northumbria, St Aidan was the founder and first bishop of Lindisfarne monastery.
He is credited with restoring Christianity to Northumbria.
Aidan was an Irish monk and started his career in the monastery on the Island of Iona.
A significant achievement for Aidan was the establishment of a centre of learning on Lindisfarne which was to become renowned throughout Europe as a cultural, religious and spiritual hub.
