Lovely picnic spot at an historic site

11th April, 2019

If you are on the Northumberland castle trail you might enjoy visiting the tiny village of Edlingham west of Alnwick.

Drive west along the B6341 toward Rothbury and you will find the castle and church on your right - down a bank.

You can park near the church. Feel free to walk around the ruins of what was once an impressive (and expensive) fortress.

Originally a manor house converted with fortifications against the Scots in the 14th century.

Edlingham is one of the top three castles in Northumberland - according to English Heritage - and not widely known.

The lovely church of St John the Baptist is also worth a look. Contained within are several interesting 16th and 17th century monuments.

There is no entrance fee and dogs are welcome on a lead. Overseen by English Heritage.
